first, the fiscal cliff. the fiscal cliff sound bites, they are flying even if the actual negotiations are at a stand still. president obama says republicans, they're the ones that need to take the next step here. republicans say no way, ball's in your court, mr. president. >> we can probably solve this in about a week. it is not that tough. >> now we need a response from the white house. we can't sit here and negotiate with ourselves. now, the revenues we're put on the table are going to come from, guess who, the rich. >> if we can get the leadership on the republican side to take that framework, take knowledge of that reality, then the numbers actually aren't that far apart. >> where are the specifics, where are the discussions? nothing is going on. >> passing middle income tax cut means the end of holding them hostage from tax cuts for the middle -- for the rich. >> i think the next 72 hours are critical. if he sits back and continues to play politics, that will give your answer of where we're going. this

the obama administration is fully prepared to go off that fiscal cliff if republicans don't agree to tax hikes on the wealthiest americans. let's bring in congressional correspondent kate bolduan. the white house won't budge on taxes. the republican led house takes a break. can you make sense of this for us? >> i think that's a little above any of our pay grade trying to make sense of it all other than it seems that it's one more fight that we've seen over and over again and we are seeing once again it play out almost as it appears slow motion, carol. you mention the call between speaker boehner and president obama. they may have talked. no read out of the call per se. we are still a long way away from a deal that is for sure. why? because at its most basic neither side is giving on their primary position. president obama continues to insist over and over again any deal must include a tax rate increase on the top 2% of wage earners which republicans just as firmly insist is a nonstarter. today the president is going to continue his public pressure campaign according to the white hous

as i told you yesterday, the republican counterproposal for heading off the fiscal cliff was a nonstarter. president obama made clear today that it will not be possible to get a deal to avert the fiscal cliff without raising taxes on the wealthy. the gop's plan did promise $2.2 trillion in deficit savings over the next decade. that's about half of what the president promises in his plan. but the gop plan does it without any tax hikes on the rich. and that is not going to fly with democrats. republicans for their part are unhappy that the president's proposal calls for $200 billion more in stimulus spending over the next year. here is how that breaks down. $95 billion to extend the payroll tax cut for one year, $30 billion to extend jobless benefit for one year, $50 billion to spend on roads and bridges and another $25 billion on short-term stuff like a temporary tax deduction for small businesses. the argument in favor of the president's plan is this could help people still hurting from years of economic trouble, but you know as well as i do, stimulus is almost as bad a word to republican

wants anyone to go off the fiscal cliff. and the reality is we have to look over the last two years. the republican party established themselves as the party that was willing to let americans entire credit rating go down the tubes in order to stop barack obama last year. it's very clear that most people are going to see them as being the party that's being more obstinate. the truth of the matter is they also because they lost so badly in the election, nobody wants to be seen playing footsie with barack obama under the table which is what they're going to have to do to get this deal done. the republican party is going tond up being blamed which is one of the reasons they will have to compromise more. it's the same thing the democrats did when bush won. you have to compromise with the party that just won. jason johnson, john brabender, thank you thank you both. >>> the new york film critics have made their choices for top films and many times they end up as oscar favorites. all the details next. all the details next. we are ga

, on avoiding going over the fiscal cliff. jess, what have you learned? >> reporter: well, you know, the news here today is that in a phone call yesterday between the president and speaker boehner, i'm told by ae person familiar with the call, that the president made clear to the speaker that for him there will be no deal on the fiscal cliff unless both sides agree to raise rates on the wealthiest. that means raise tax rates for top earners. the reason that this is news is because there's been discussion publicly that perhaps they could find a rev new agreement where it would just involve capping deductions or maybe they could get to revenue just through tax reform, and with this piece of detail from that phone call yesterday, it would seem that the democrats, the president personally, is drawing a line saying those other ways are not enough. his campaign message that the top earners have to pay more, he is sticking to that line many these negotiations. >> jess, do we know how the republicans responded to this red line? >> wel
